How Often Should You Change Your Oil

Changing you car oil

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, there are a lot of things to consider. Tire maintenance and replacement, air filters, spark plugs, windscreen wipers, brake pads and battery maintenance are just some of the most important things to keep in mind to extend the life of your car or van. Some people can take care of these things themselves, while others rely on their local garage to keep their vehicle running smoothly.

Regular oil change

Another important regular maintenance procedure is changing your car’s oil. When it comes to how often your car’s oil should be changed, the answer is that it depends on the type of vehicle you have and your driving habits. Most cars and vans require oil filter changes every 10,000 miles or once a year. If you put on a lot of miles regularly, you may want to have your oil changed more frequently than that. If you drive less or don’t use your car very often, you may be able to go as much as 12 months between oil changes. On some new cars, you can have the oil changed every 24 months. With regards to the milage, it can go even up 19,000 miles between oil changes. It’s worth checking your car manual for that.

Don’t forget about the oil filter

No matter how much or how little you drive, you still need to have your oil filter changed regularly. Failure to do so makes it more difficult for your car to absorb heat and properly lubricate the engine. It puts more of a toll on your car in general. After a time, dirt particles and sludge can accumulate. They can lead to sluggish performance and even breakdowns.
